Design , Engineering and Technology - Autodesk Gallery

Introduction:

Autodesk is an American multinational 3D design software corporation that makes software products and services for the architecture, engineering, construction, manufacturing, media, education, and entertainment industries.

Autodesk's flagship CAD (computer-aided design ) software AutoCAD, and Autodesk Revit, is primarily used by architects, engineers, and structural designers. If you’ve ever driven a high-performance car, been in one of the admired skyscrapers, used a smartphone, or watched a great film, chances are you’ve experienced what millions of Autodesk customers are designing and making with this software. Autodesk has various software portfolios, from simple sketching tools to complex building infrastructure management tools.

In front of one of the most beloved buildings in San Francisco, the Ferry Building, Autodesk owns a gallery that features their customers’ work. This gallery is called the Autodesk Gallery. It is a great place to introduce your kid to what design can mean in various industries. Design is not just about making things pretty. Design is about how ideas flow and function as well as how they coexist alongside engineering, science, and provide us with an even deeper understanding of humanity itself. The Autodesk Gallery is also a great place for parents to realize how design is widely affecting our daily lives. If you are planning to visit, you can take a look at Autodesk’s "visit us” page“. They often provide a free guided tour on Wednesdays at 12:30 pm, however, they may have Covid19 restrictions in place so contact them to double-check.

Discussion points while visiting the Autodesk Gallery:

Go through a simple design thinking process with your child. Ask:

  • What kind of problems have they been interested in solving recently? Who are they trying to solve these problems for? ( Or who are your potential users for their design)?

  • Do you have an idea of how you can solve it? Do you think your idea would work for that problem you were thinking about and your potential users?

  • Do you want to sketch that idea?

  • If it is a service format: Do you want to find out more about the needs of your users? What research can we do?

  • If it is a product format, build the prototype (it can be with playdough, with cardboard, or you can use Autodesk’s free student software if you want a more advanced prototype)
